Liverpool indie duo whose career was cut short by a crash.
Her's (also known as thatbandofhers) were an indie rock duo from Liverpool, England. The band consisted of English guitarist and lead vocalist Stephen Fitzpatrick, alongside Norwegian bassist and backing vocalist Audun Laading. They put out a compilation album called *Songs of Her's* in 2017, and followed it with a full studio album, *Invitation to Her's*, in 2018. In 2019, while touring the United States, both musicians and their tour manager died in a head-on car crash in Arizona.
Fitzpatrick, originally from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, handled lead vocals and guitar. Laading, from Flekkerøy, Kristiansand, played bass and sang backing vocals. Fitzpatrick also played drums, but the band relied on a drum machine, with both members programming it. The two met at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, graduating in 2016 with three-year music degrees. Paul McCartney presented them with their certificates at the ceremony. They formed Her's in 2015 while still students, having previously played together in the rhythm section of another Liverpool band, The Sundogs. The duo started Her's as a joke, filming comedic music videos around Liverpool and posting them on YouTube.
Their debut single, "Dorothy," came out on 7 April 2016. They performed at the 2016 Green Man Festival Rising Stage. The nine-track compilation *Songs of Her's* was released on 12 May 2017, earning four stars from *The Skinny*. Writing for *NME* in April 2017, Thomas Smith noted that the band never stayed still, shifting between lo-fi bedroom pop and slacker-rock while nailing whatever style they tried. Their debut full-length album, *Invitation to Her's*, arrived on Heist or Hit Records on 24 August 2018. *Paste* included them on a list of "The 15 New Liverpool Bands You Need to Know in 2018." An acoustic performance at the 2019 South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, was featured on BBC Music Introducing. The album includes the single "Harvey," which references the 1950 film of the same name.
The duo were loyal to their instruments. Laading used a Rickenbacker 4001 bass, while Fitzpatrick played a Fender Blacktop Series Jaguar HH guitar. During live shows, they sometimes swapped instruments and used a Novation Launchpad USB MIDI Controller linked to a MacBook Pro to run their drum machine.
